About
Arroyo Seco Campground is a developed facility in Los Padres National Forest's Monterey Ranger District, nestled into a hillside surrounded by oak trees and abundant shrubbery. Situated along the Arroyo Seco River at approximately 1,200 feet elevation, the campground offers views of Ventana Wilderness peaks and access to a small lake where anglers can pursue bass and catfish. The nearby river features a beach area for wading and swimming, though water levels depend on seasonal rainfall. The campground is divided into modern and primitive areas. Modern sites feature paved roads and spurs, coin-operated showers, flush toilets with ADA accessibility, and drinking water. Primitive sites offer a quieter experience with vault toilets while still providing water hydrants, fire rings, and picnic tables. Both single and double-occupancy sites are available for tents and RVs, though no hookups or dump station exist. Recreation opportunities abound with the 15.5-mile Santa Lucia Trail providing hiking and horseback access into the Ventana Wilderness. The McPhearson Peak and Aliso trails also originate here. Fishing requires a license for those over 16, and small non-motorized boats are permitted on the lake. Motorized vehicles are prohibited beyond the gated road into the wilderness.
Directions
From Highway 101 northbound, exit at Arroyo Seco Road near Greenfield and proceed 16.2 miles west to the junction of Carmel Valley Road and Arroyo Seco Road. Bear left at the junction where the sign says 'Public Campground' and continue to the campground at road's end. From Highway 101 southbound, take the first exit (Arroyo Seco) into Greenfield, turn left on Elm Street, go west to Arroyo Seco Road and turn left. Follow to the end.
