About
Jumper Creek Primitive Camp Zone Paddle In offers backcountry camping in a remote section of Withlacoochee State Forest, approximately 12 miles southeast of Inverness, Florida. This is a paddle-in, paddle-out only area with no vehicle access. Campers must travel approximately 5 miles north from the SR-48 bridge or 6 miles south from the Lake Panasoffkee outlet near CR-470 on the Withlacoochee River to reach Shell Island and the designated camping zone. The camping area is delineated by yellow-colored bands painted on trees. This is a truly primitive backcountry experience with no potable water, no restrooms, and no electric hookups. Some areas within the zone may have fire rings, but campers should be prepared to be completely self-sufficient. Before planning a trip, check the Burn Ban Public Dashboard as drought-related restrictions may apply. Recreational activities in the area include hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, swimming, fishing, hunting during appropriate seasons with proper licenses, stargazing, wildflower viewing, and nature study. The remote location and water-only access make this an ideal destination for paddlers seeking solitude and a true wilderness camping experience.
