About
Jimmy Joe Campground is a no-fee primitive campground located along the banks of East Rosebud Creek in the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Situated at 6,000 feet elevation in the East Rosebud drainage, considered one of the most scenic areas in the Beartooth Mountains, the campground provides a rustic base camp for exploring the surrounding wilderness.
The campground features 10 individual sites managed on a first-come, first-served basis with a 16-day stay limit. Some sites include bear-resistant food storage lockers, a critical amenity in this bear-active region. The campground can accommodate trailers up to 30 feet, though site sizes vary. Access to popular trails including East Rosebud Trail (#15), Spread Creek Trail (#13), and Phantom Creek Trail (#17) makes this a favorite among hikers and backpackers.
As a primitive facility, campers must come prepared with their own water, as none is available on-site. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no trash service, so visitors must pack out all waste. The campground operates seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, with reduced or no services during shoulder seasons. The scenic East Rosebud Creek offers fishing opportunities right from the campground.
