About

Horseshoe Campground occupies a scenic meadow setting at 10,600 feet in the Pike-San Isabel National Forest, approximately 8 miles west of Fairplay on County Road 18. The 19 campsites are nestled among aspen, Engelmann spruce, and bristlecone pines at the base of Sheep Mountain, with Horseshoe Creek running nearby. Sites offer parking spurs ranging from 25 to 40 feet, with a maximum trailer length of 25 feet. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and pedestal grill. Vault toilets and potable water via hand pump are provided. This is a primitive campground with no hookups, showers, or dump station. Bear-resistant food storage practices are required. The campground provides excellent access to several fourteener peaks: Mount Sherman, Lincoln, Bross, and Democrat are all within striking distance. The nearby Limber Grove Trail winds through ancient 1,000-year-old limber pines with massive twisted trunks. Fishing and wading in Horseshoe Creek are popular activities. Reservations can be made through Recreation.gov at least 4 days in advance, with walk-up sites available first-come, first-served.

Directions

From Fairplay, travel south on US-285 for about one mile. Turn right onto County Road 18. Follow County Road 18 for approximately 6 miles to the campground on the right.
