About

Schwartz Cabin is one of the recognized historic cabins in Pike National Forest, dating back to the mining and railroad era of the 1880s. This small single-room detached cabin is located at the base of Boreas Pass in Park County at 11,492 feet elevation, offering impressive views of the Mosquito Range. The primitive cabin accommodates up to three guests with one full bed and one twin bed, and features a wood stove for heat and a fireplace. The cabin provides a truly rustic experience with no water, electricity, cooking utensils, pillows, or blankets. Guests must bring all supplies including ample drinking water, food, sleeping bags, cookware, flashlights, outdoor furniture, and firewood. A single vault toilet is shared with Roberts Cabin and located approximately 200 yards south of Schwartz Cabin. Entry is by combination lock provided in the confirmation letter. The location offers excellent access to hiking including the Colorado Trail, wildlife viewing opportunities for elk, deer, moose, black bear, and golden eagles, and winter activities like cross-country skiing. The cabin is convenient to Como, Breckenridge, and Fairplay. Advanced reservations through Recreation.gov are required; walk-ups are not available.

Directions

From Denver, take Highway 285 southwest approximately 75 miles to Como. Turn north on County Road 33 and drive approximately 4 miles to the cabin. Parking is along the east side of the road. Schwartz Cabin is located behind Roberts Cabin.
