About
Horse Heaven Cabin is a historic one-room cabin built in 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps for use as a fire lookout station. At 7,100 feet elevation, it occupies a striking location on the boundary between the 1.2 million-acre Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and the 2.3 million-acre Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, two of the largest designated wilderness areas in the continental United States. The 16-by-18 foot cabin accommodates up to 4 guests on two built-in bunk beds with sleeping pads provided. Amenities include a wood stove for heat with firewood supplied outside, a propane cook stove and lantern (guests must bring propane), and basic cooking utensils, pots, pans, and a coffee pot. A vault toilet is located in a separate outhouse. There is no potable water; a small stream nearby can be treated but guests should bring drinking water. Access requires a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle, and the last 300 yards to the cabin is rough and rocky. The remote location has no cell phone coverage. Visitors should be prepared for wildlife encounters including black bears, mountain lions, and wolves. The cabin lies near the prehistoric southern Nez Perce Trail, a historic Native American migration route.

Turn south at the sign for Trail #28 Sabe Cr 10 and follow the rough rocky road 1/4 mile to the cabin. High-clearance 4WD required.
