About

Horse Camp Trailhead is a dispersed camping area located in the Palouse Corridor of the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. This site serves primarily as an access point for the Sand Mountain OHV Trail system, with the actual trail beginning on the north side of Forest Service Road 381 while the trailhead and unloading area are on the southern side. The site offers approximately 5 dispersed camping spots in and around the trailhead area, available on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge. The trailhead is designed to accommodate horse trailers and OHVs, making it a popular staging area for off-highway vehicle enthusiasts and equestrian users. The area is situated in the rolling, forested terrain characteristic of the Palouse region, where dense forests meet the edges of the rich farmland of the Palouse prairie. Access is via the White Pine Scenic Byway (Highway 6), then Palouse River Road southeast for 3.5 miles, followed by a right turn onto Forest Service Road 381 for approximately 1 mile to reach the trailhead.

Directions

From the White Pine Scenic Byway (Highway 6), take Palouse River Road southeast for 3.5 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 381 and travel approximately 1 mile to find the trailhead unloading area on the north side of the road.
