About

Horse Camp Trailhead is a primitive dispersed camping area in the Palouse Corridor of Idaho's Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests. It serves as the northern terminus of the popular Sand Mountain OHV Trail system, making it a key staging area for off-highway vehicle recreation. The trailhead features an unloading area on the south side of Forest Road 381, while the actual trail begins on the north side. This is a primitive site with no developed amenities. There are no restrooms, no potable water, and no developed campsites. Approximately 5 dispersed camping spots are available in and around the trailhead on a first-come, first-served basis at no cost. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water and packing out all trash. The area is best suited for OHV enthusiasts looking for a base camp to access the Sand Mountain trail system. The surrounding Palouse Corridor offers additional recreation opportunities including other campgrounds with more developed facilities.

Directions

From the White Pine Scenic Byway (Highway 6), take Palouse River Road southeast for 3.5 miles. Turn right on Forest Service Road 381 and travel approximately 1 mile to find the trailhead unloading area on the north side of the road.
