About
Historic Lake Scott State Park is a stunning 1,020-acre oasis located 11 miles north of Scott City in western Kansas along the Western Vistas Historic Byway. Hidden in a canyon, the park features natural springs, deep wooded canyons, craggy bluffs, and surrounds a 100-acre spring-fed fishing lake. Listed by National Geographic as one of the country's 50 must-see state parks, it is one of the most historic locations in Kansas with more than 26 documented archaeological sites. The park preserves the remains of El Cuartelejo, a National Historic Landmark and the northernmost known Native American pueblo. The Steele home, built by the area's original settlers, has been preserved much as it was 100 years ago. About one mile south is Battle Canyon, site of the last Native American battle in Kansas. The park is ideal for camping, boating, swimming, hiking, hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation. Nature trails accommodate hikers, horseback riders, and naturalists, providing excellent opportunities to observe wild turkey, deer, bobcat, and beaver. Camping options range from primitive walk-in sites to utility sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups. The park also features a horse camp area, two modern cabins, shower buildings, a swimming beach, boat ramp, and disc golf course.
