Located 10 miles north of Cambridge in southwest Nebraska, Medicine Creek State Recreation Area is a hidden outdoor getaway centered around the 1,768-acre Harry Strunk Lake with 29 miles of shoreline. The recreation area offers diverse camping options including Electric Plus sites, Electric sites, Basic sites, and over 200 Primitive sites across several campgrounds. The main Shady Bay Campground on the east side features 77 hard-surfaced camping pads, many shaded, with 34 electrical hookups plus four modern lakefront cabins. The long, narrow configuration of the lake creates numerous bays and small islands that provide prime fishing hotspots for king-sized crappie, walleye, and other panfish. Three boat ramps and three docks accommodate fishing boats, sailboats, kayaks, and other watercraft. A public swim beach at Shady Bay offers cooling relief on hot days, while a nine-hole disc golf course provides additional recreation. With more than 5,500 acres of wildlife habitat management, Medicine Creek is one of the finest public hunting areas in Nebraska, particularly for pheasants and quail in fall and winter. The park includes modern restrooms with showers, vault toilets, dump and fill stations, 136 picnic tables, and a private concession near the dam offering restaurant service, groceries, camping supplies, and additional cabin rentals. The recreation area remains open year-round with shower buildings operating seasonally from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
