About

Hilltop Campground is located on top of a rolling hill in an old growth Douglas Fir forest at 6,800 feet elevation, midway between Cliff and Wade Lakes in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The campground offers 18 shaded, quiet sites away from the busier lakeside campgrounds, accessed via a steep, winding 3/4-mile drive from the Cliff Lake road. Due to the steep access road, trailers exceeding 22 feet are not recommended. The campground provides basic Forest Service amenities including picnic tables and fire rings at each site, vault toilets, hand-pumped drinking water, and garbage service. A food storage order is in effect requiring all food and attractants to be stored in a bear-proof manner when unattended. Recreation opportunities include fishing, swimming, and small craft boating at Cliff Lake (1.25 miles) and Wade Lake (1.75 miles). A hiking trail from the campground connects to Wade Lake campground and accesses other routes in the trail system. The world-famous Madison River, a premier trout stream, is approximately seven miles away, and the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park is less than 40 miles from the campground.

Directions

From Ennis, travel south on Highway 287 for approximately 37 miles. Turn west at the Cliff and Wade Lakes sign, then take Forest Road 241 west for 5 miles to the campground turnoff. The campground is accessed via a steep, winding 3/4-mile road from Cliff Lake road.
