About
Hidden Lake Lookout stands as one of the crown jewels of Washington's North Cascades, offering hikers and backpackers a true alpine experience. Built in 1931, this gable-roof fire lookout is one of only two remaining of its style in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Perched at 6,850 feet on Hidden Lake Peak, the lookout sits precisely on the western boundary of North Cascades National Park, providing spectacular 360-degree views encompassing the heart of the park, the Glacier Peak Wilderness, and countless Cascade peaks. The trail climbs through forest and wildflower meadows before ascending into stark granite terrain well above treeline. The final approach to the lookout involves navigating boulders and potentially steep snowfields that can persist well into July. The lookout itself is maintained by volunteers and available for overnight stays on a first-come, first-served basis, offering a unique opportunity to sleep above the clouds in one of Washington's most dramatic alpine settings. Access requires driving the gravel Cascade River Road east from Marblemount for 12.7 miles, followed by a rough Forest Road to the trailhead. The site offers no potable water and limited facilities, making this a true backcountry experience suitable for experienced alpine hikers and backpackers prepared for rapidly changing mountain weather.
Directions
From Sedro-Woolley, take WA-20 East for 40 miles. Cross the Skagit River bridge at Marblemount and continue onto gravel Cascade River Road for 12.7 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 1540 and follow for 4.7 miles to the trailhead. Hike Trail 745 approximately 4.5 miles to the lookout.
