Heyburn State Park

About

Established in 1908, Heyburn State Park holds the distinction of being the oldest park in the Pacific Northwest. Created from the Coeur d'Alene Indian Reservation by an act of Congress and signed by President William Howard Taft, the park was named in honor of U.S. Senator W.B. Heyburn. Comprising approximately 8,076 acres of land and 2,128 acres of water, the park showcases towering ponderosa pines, flower-filled meadows, and the placid waters of three lakes: Chatcolet, Benewah, and Hidden. The park features 129 campsites across multiple campgrounds, including 72 standard sites and 57 serviced sites with hookups. Accommodations also include two ADA-accessible cabins, two cottages, and equestrian campsites with paddocks at the South and North Side trailheads. Much of the park's infrastructure was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1934 and 1941, including roads, trails, bridges, and the iconic Rocky Point Lodge, which still stands today. Recreational opportunities abound year-round. The famous Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes bike path runs directly through the park, while the South Side Trail System offers over 16 miles of multi-use trails ranging from easy to difficult. The shadowy St. Joe River winds along the park's eastern edge. Rocky Point Marina provides boat launch facilities and rentals of kayaks, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, and paddleboats. The park is located 37 miles south of Coeur d'Alene and 50 miles southeast of Spokane, Washington.
