Herd Lake Campground

Closed — Closed for winter due to snow and road conditions. The narrow, remote access road is typically impassable from late fall through spring. Summer access is first-come, first-served with no reservations.

About

Herd Lake Campground is a primitive, single-site campground managed by the BLM Challis Field Office, located in a remote area adjacent to the Jerry Peak-Jim McClure Wilderness. The campsite sits tucked below Herd Creek Road, about 1 mile north of Herd Lake, along Herd Creek. At approximately 10 miles southeast of East Fork Road via Herd Lake Road, this free camping spot offers solitude and access to backcountry recreation. The site includes basic amenities: one picnic table, a fire ring, and a vault toilet. There is no potable water available, so campers must bring their own supply. Cell service is limited in this remote location. A trailhead at the campground provides non-motorized access to Herd Lake and wilderness hiking opportunities. The access road is narrow with limited turnaround space, making it challenging for larger trailers. Campers should exercise caution and assess whether their rig can safely navigate the road and campsite. The 14-day stay limit applies, and the site operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted.
