About

Grizzly Creek Primitive occupies a shaded stretch of oak and Ponderosa pine forest along Grizzly Creek in Black Hills National Forest. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the campground retains its historic character, including a stone pavilion still available for camper use. The 19 sites are mostly tent-only, though one standard nonelectric site can accommodate vehicles up to 24 feet. The campground sits on the scenic Iron Mountain Road, famous for its CCC-built pigtail bridges and tunnels framing views of Mount Rushmore. The memorial is just 2 miles away. Nearby destinations include Custer State Park, Crazy Horse Monument, Wind Cave National Park, and Jewel Cave. From the campground, visitors can access the Centennial Trail and portions of the Black Elk Wilderness and Norbeck Wildlife Preserve for primitive hiking. Due to tight, sharp turns on the access road, towing is prohibited. This includes trailers, fifth-wheels, motorhomes towing vehicles, and pop-up campers. Generators are permitted from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. only. A $2 per pet per night fee applies.
