About

Geode State Park has been a traditional favorite destination for locals and out-of-state visitors seeking a peaceful lakeside camping experience in southeast Iowa. Named after Iowa's state rock, the park encompasses 1,640 acres centered around the 186-acre Lake Geode, built in 1950. The campground underwent major renovations from 2018 to 2020, improving facilities for modern campers. The park offers 88 campsites including 52 electric sites, 14 full hookup sites, 18 tent-only sites, and one youth group site. Two modern shower buildings serve the campground, and two camp pads with restrooms are accessible to mobility-impaired visitors. Sites accommodate varying RV lengths with driveways ranging from 42 to 68 feet. The campground operates April 1 through December 14, accepting reservations through the Iowa State Parks system. Lake Geode is the park's prime attraction, known for excellent fishing for bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. As a no-wake lake, it provides peaceful conditions for boating and fishing. Two boat ramps on the east side offer water access, while shoreline fishing is available from multiple picnic areas. The dam area is designated for 24-hour fishing. Several hiking trails challenge outdoor enthusiasts, including a main trail along the north shore extending to the dam, and a connecting trail completing a loop around the lake. The park also connects to the 46-mile Southeast Iowa Bike Route linking Geode with Lacey-Keosauqua State Park.

Directions

From the east, take the exit off Highway 34 at Middletown and go south for about 1/4 mile to the intersection of old Highway 34 and County Road J-20. Proceed 6 miles west on J-20. The road leads straight to the main entrance of the park and campground.
