Battle of Athens State Historic Site commemorates Missouri's northernmost Civil War battle west of the Mississippi River, where Union troops defeated the pro-South Missouri State Guard in 1861. The site preserves the historic town of Athens, including the Thome-Benning House, which was pierced by a cannonball during the battle. Today, visitors can explore exhibits, take tours, and enjoy the natural setting along the Des Moines River. The picnic shelter is available for daily use and can be reserved up to 12 months in advance. It accommodates up to 125 people and includes modern restrooms available during the on-season, a commercial kitchen, and a large grill. When not reserved, the shelter is available first-come, first-served. The site also features additional picnic areas near the day-use area and lakefront, both with tables, grills, and vault toilets. Beyond the shelter facilities, the historic site offers hiking trails, a lake for fishing, more than a mile of Des Moines River frontage for boating, and nearby primitive and electric campsites available on a walk-up basis. The combination of Civil War history and natural recreation makes this a unique destination in northeast Missouri.

The Enclosed Kitchen Shelter is located within the historic area of the Battle of Athens State Historic Site. From the park entrance, follow the main road to the historic area; the shelter is situated near the Thome-Benning House.
