About
Battle of Athens State Historic Site preserves the location of Missouri's northernmost Civil War battle, fought on August 5, 1861. The enclosed kitchen shelter provides a substantial facility for group gatherings, family reunions, or campers needing modern amenities. The shelter features a full modern kitchen, electricity, extended-end tables, flush restrooms, and an accessible shower stall for campground users. The shelter accommodates up to 160 people and is available year-round. Reservations can be made through Missouri State Parks' online system 30 days to 12 months in advance; for shorter notice, call the site directly. When not reserved, the shelter is available first-come, first-served. Modern restroom facilities at the shelter are operational during the on-season from mid-April through October. The historic site also offers basic and electric campsites about one mile from the shelter, hiking trails, fishing at the on-site lake, and interpretive programs including free tours of the Thome-Benning House. The tree-studded landscape and Des Moines River frontage make it a peaceful destination for history enthusiasts and outdoor recreation.

The Enclosed Kitchen Shelter is located within the historic area of the Battle of Athens State Historic Site. From the park entrance, follow the main road to the historic area; the shelter is situated near the Thome-Benning House.
