About

Fort Massac State Park Campground occupies a scenic stretch of Illinois' first state park, established in 1908 overlooking the Ohio River near Metropolis. The park encompasses nearly 1,500 acres of rolling woodland and river frontage in the southern tip of Illinois. The campground features 50 Class A vehicular sites with electric hookups, access to a shower building with flush toilets, and a sanitary dump station. Two ADA-accessible campsites with wheelchair-accessible picnic tables and grills are available. Beyond camping, the park offers extensive recreational opportunities including over 8 miles of hiking trails, an 18-hole disc golf course, fishing and boating access on the Ohio River, and seasonal hunting programs. Three playgrounds and four picnic shelters serve day-use visitors. The Visitor Center provides interpretive programs year-round, and the annual Fort Massac Encampment festival in October draws thousands for living history demonstrations. The campground shower building typically closes by November 1 and reopens around May 1, weather depending. Tent camping and group camping options supplement the electric sites for those seeking a more primitive experience.
