About
Redbud Campground sits within Bell Smith Springs Recreation Area, one of the most scenic destinations in Shawnee National Forest. This primitive 21-site campground is nestled in a heavily forested area among rocky streams and dramatic sandstone cliffs. The remote location provides a peaceful camping experience surrounded by oak, hickory, beech, and tulip poplar trees. The campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the eight-mile trail system that winds through Bell Smith Springs. Trails feature strange rock formations including Devil's Backbone, Boulder Falls, and a natural rock bridge with a 125-foot span. The area is designated as a National Natural Landmark due to its distinct plant communities and geological features, hosting over 700 species of flowering plants, ferns, and lichens. Birders visit to spot tanagers, sparrows, pileated woodpeckers, and various vireo species. This is a primitive, first-come, first-served campground with basic amenities. The remote gravel road access and lack of reservations mean campers should arrive prepared. Sites are spaced 50-60 feet apart among the trees, providing a sense of privacy despite the proximity. Each site accommodates up to 8 people and 2 vehicles.
