About
Falls Lake Shelter is a three-sided Adirondack-style structure situated above Falls Lake in the remote backcountry of Tongass National Forest. The shelter provides basic overnight accommodation for hikers traveling the Cascade Creek Trail, which connects Cascade Creek Cabin to Swan Lake. Access requires floatplane or boat transportation to Thomas Bay, about 16 air miles northeast of Petersburg. The shelter sits at the east end of Falls Lake, reached by a short 0.25-mile spur trail from the main Cascade Creek Trail. The area offers excellent rainbow trout fishing in both Falls Lake and nearby Swan Lake, along with scenic views of cliffs and waterfalls. This is a primitive backcountry facility with no amenities; campers must be fully self-sufficient. Use of the shelter is free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. The remote location and floatplane/boat access requirement means this shelter sees light use, making it an appealing destination for those seeking solitude in the Tongass wilderness.
Directions
The shelter is located at the east end of Falls Lake along the Cascade Creek Trail, about 16 air miles northeast of Petersburg in Thomas Bay. Access options include floatplane or boat to Cascade Creek Cabin trailhead, floatplane or boat to the tidewater trailhead near the mouth of Cascade Creek, or floatplane to the Swan Lake area. From the second Falls Lake junction on the trail, descend 0.25 miles to reach the shelter.
