About

Spurt Cove Cabin is a rustic hunter-style Forest Service cabin located on the mainland in southeastern Alaska's Tongass National Forest. Situated in a small cove on the north side of Thomas Bay, the cabin provides a scenic base camp for exploring one of the region's favorite destinations among boaters and kayakers. The terrain surrounding the cabin is predominantly gently sloping with some steep bluffs, and Spurt Cove is known for its interesting rock formations. The cabin features oil and wood stoves, three single bunks and one double bunk (sleeps 4), a wooden table and benches, a large covered deck, and basic tools including an axe and maul. A pit-type outhouse is provided. Visitors must bring their own stove oil (#1 heating oil or kerosene only), bedding, cooking utensils, and drinking water. The nearest water source is a small stream near the cabin that should be treated before use. Recreational opportunities abound in Thomas Bay. Halibut and king salmon fishing is available in the bay, while trout can be found in beaver ponds behind the cabin. A moderately difficult 1.1-mile trail to Spurt Lake begins a quarter-mile northeast of the cabin. The area offers numerous options for day and multi-day trips to Baird, Muddy, and Patterson glaciers, Scenery Cove, and the Cosmos Mountain Range. Orca whales and porpoises are frequently spotted in the waters.

Directions

Accessible by boat or float plane only, approximately 18 miles by boat or 16 miles by plane from Petersburg. The cabin is accessible at any tide, but care should be taken when entering the cove at high tide as boats can go dry quickly. Some float plane operators will not enter the cove at certain tides due to poor water visibility.
