About

Spurt Cove Cabin is located on the mainland in a small cove on the north side of Thomas Bay within the Tongass National Forest. This remote hunter-style cabin is accessible only by boat or floatplane, approximately 18 miles by boat or 16 miles by plane from Petersburg. The cabin features two wooden bunks accommodating up to four people, a table and benches, an oil heater, and a wood stove for cooking. A large covered deck provides scenic views of the cove, known for its interesting rock formations. The terrain surrounding the cabin is predominantly gently sloping with some steep bluffs. The Thomas Bay area is a favorite destination among boaters and kayakers, offering numerous single and multiple-day trip options to Baird, Muddy and Patterson glaciers, Scenery Cove, and the Cosmos Mountain Range. Halibut and king salmon fishing is available in the bay, while anglers may find trout in the beaver ponds behind the cabin. Orca whales and porpoises are often seen in the area. A moderately difficult 1.1-mile trail to Spurt Lake starts a quarter-mile northeast of the cabin and requires a boat to access the trailhead. Visitors must be prepared for extremely remote and wild conditions. The cabin is accessible at any tide, but care should be taken when entering the cove at high tide as boats can go dry quickly. Weather can occasionally delay float plane and boat travel, and cabin users should be prepared for potentially longer stays. All water must be packed in or treated from nearby sources, and all garbage and food must be packed out.

Directions

Accessible by boat or floatplane only. About 18 miles by boat or 16 miles by plane from Petersburg. The cabin is accessible at any tide, but care should be taken when entering the cove at high tide as boats can go dry quickly. Some float plane operators will not enter the cove at certain tides due to poor visibility through the water. Refer to USGS topographic map Sumdum A3.
