About

Perched atop Evergreen Mountain at 5,587 feet, this historic fire lookout was built in 1935 to spot wildfires in the Skykomish drainage. During World War II it served as an Aircraft Warning Station, then remained an active fire tower until the early 1980s. Volunteer restoration efforts in the 1990s led to its placement on the National Register of Historic Places. The 14x14-foot cabin accommodates up to four guests with one twin bed, three additional mattresses, a propane stove, two battery-powered lanterns, and basic cookware. A composting toilet sits several hundred feet down the ridge. There is no water, heat, or electricity. Guests must bring all water, sleeping bags, flashlights, toilet paper, and cleaning supplies, and must pack out all trash and food. Access requires a steep 1.5-mile hike on the Evergreen Lookout Trail, which climbs through remnants of the 1967 Evergreen Mountain Burn. The trail passes through dense forest before reaching a small saddle below the lookout. On clear days, the reward is sweeping views of Glacier Peak, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Daniels, Keyes Peak, and Columbia Glacier. Wildlife in the area includes black bears, bobcats, elk, bald eagles, and wolves.

Directions

From State Route 2, turn north onto Beckler River Road (Forest Road 65), 0.5 miles east of Skykomish. Continue 13 miles to Jack Pass. Turn right onto FSR 6550 and drive about 1 mile to FSR 6554. Drive FSR 6554 for 6.5 miles to the trailhead. From there, hike 1.5 miles on Evergreen Lookout Trail to the cabin.
