Heybrook Lookout

Heybrook Lookout is one of only 106 fire lookouts remaining in Washington State. Perched atop its namesake ridge at 1,700 feet, the 67-foot tower provides spectacular 360-degree views of Mount Index, Mount Baring, Mount Persis, Bridal Veil Falls, and the Wild Sky Wilderness. The original lookout was a tent platform built in 1925, replaced by a 45-foot log leg tower in 1932. The current structure was built in 1964. The 14x14-foot cabin sleeps four and is furnished with one twin bed with mattress, two floor mattresses, a table and chairs, propane stove with pot and pan, silverware, coffee pot, and battery-operated lanterns. A primitive vault toilet is located several hundred feet down the ridge, and a picnic table sits at the tower base. Guests must bring their own water, sleeping bags, flashlight, toilet paper, garbage bags, and first aid supplies. Access requires a 1-mile hike from the trailhead on U.S. Highway 2 (milepost 37.5, east of Index) with 900 feet of elevation gain, followed by climbing 84 steps to enter the cabin. A key must be obtained from the Skykomish Ranger Station prior to arrival. October access may be impacted by early snowfall.

Directions

Drive U.S. Highway 2 to milepost 37.5, approximately 2 miles east of the town of Index. Limited parking is on the north side of the highway across from the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest sign. From the trailhead, hike 1 mile with 900 feet of elevation gain to reach the lookout. Climb 84 steps to enter the cabin.
