About
Deer Group Campground is an ideal retreat for extended families or large groups seeking a peaceful escape in the San Bernardino National Forest. The campground features one large group site that can accommodate up to 40 people and eight vehicles, situated in a somewhat secluded stand of mature conifers that provide ample shade. The site is equipped with picnic tables, grills, and a campfire circle for group gatherings. The campground's location south of Big Bear Lake offers convenient access to numerous recreational opportunities. Hiking and mountain biking enthusiasts can explore trails like the Seven Oaks Trail, which leads to spectacular views of San Gorgonio Peak, the highest point in Southern California. Big Bear Lake itself provides excellent fishing opportunities for trout, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and largemouth bass, as well as boating activities. The Pine Knot Trail is accessible directly from the campground, leading north toward Big Bear and south toward Grand View Point. Access to the campground requires traveling on Forest Service dirt roads, with high clearance or 4x4 vehicles recommended. Campers should be prepared to bring all necessary supplies, including drinking water, as none is available at the campground. The area is frequented by bears, so proper food storage is essential. The Big Bear Discovery Center, located about 10 miles from the campground, offers area information, educational programs, and an interpretive trail.
