WHERE...Moffat, Routt, Jackson, Grand, Rio Blanco, Garfield, Eagle, Summit, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Mesa, Pitkin, Lake, Park, Delta, Gunnison, Chaffee, Montrose, Ouray, San Miguel, Dolores, and northern parts of Montezuma and Saguache Counties. Locations include, but are not limited to Craig, Steamboat Springs, Walden, Granby, Hot Sulphur Springs, Kremmling, Meeker, Rangely, Glenwood Springs, Eagle, Vail, Breckenridge, Central City, Georgetown, Grand Junction, Aspen, Leadville, Fairplay, Delta, Gunnison, Buena Vista, Salida, Montrose, Nucla, Ouray, Telluride, Dove Creek, and Saguache. About
Crag Crest Campground is a scenic, high-elevation camping destination on Grand Mesa in western Colorado. At 10,300 feet, the campground is situated on a mountainside blanketed in dense spruce forest, perched above Eggleston Lake. A handful of the 11 sites offer lake views, while sites 5 and 6 are designated tent-only with no vehicle turnaround. The campground operates strictly first-come, first-served with no advance reservations. The location serves as one of the access points for the Crag Crest National Recreation Trail, a 10.3-mile circular route that follows the crest of Grand Mesa with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. A parking area outside the campground accommodates approximately 25 vehicles for day hikers. Fishing is available at Eggleston Lake. Facilities are basic: vault toilets are provided but there is no potable water on site. Campers should bring their own water supply. The maximum spur length is 27 feet, limiting access for larger RVs. The campground typically opens around mid-June and closes in mid-September, though dates vary depending on snowpack and weather conditions. Mosquito repellent is essential during summer months.
Directions
From Collbran, CO, at the Access Grand Mesa sign, take Road 58.5 south 1.9 miles to a T intersection. Turn left, staying on 58.5 Road (which becomes 59 Road), and go 5.8 miles to Forest Road 121. Continue straight on FR 121 (gravel) for 12.5 miles to the campground sign, then turn right into the campground.
