About

Boulder Oaks Equestrian Campground sits in the scenic Descanso Ranger District of Cleveland National Forest, approximately 55 miles east of San Diego. At 3,300 ft elevation, the campground provides relief from lower desert heat with shade from mature oak and manzanita trees. The setting attracts both equestrians seeking horse-friendly camping and hikers accessing the Pacific Crest Trail, which passes directly through the area. The campground features two distinct loops: an equestrian loop with sites that include horse corrals and trailer parking, and a family loop with standard campsites. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and grate. The facility has 17 horse stables and approximately 24 campsites total. Vault toilets are available in each loop. The surrounding mountains are dotted with sagebrush, and wildflowers add color to the landscape in spring and early summer. Horseback riding is permitted on all Cleveland National Forest roads and trails except nature trails. The area is notable as habitat for the endangered Arroyo Toad and supports many species of local and migratory birds.

Directions

From San Diego, take I-8 east approximately 55 miles to the Buckman Springs Road exit. Continue east on Old Highway 80 for 2 miles. The campground entrance is on the right side of the road.
