About

Flagtail Lookout sits atop Flagtail Mountain at 6,585 feet elevation in the remote Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, within the Malheur National Forest in Grant County. The original 20-foot round timber tower with an L-4 cab was constructed in 1934, and a 55-foot treated timber tower with house was erected in 1966. This is an operational fire lookout tower staffed by the Forest Service during the summer fire season, typically 4-5 months per year. It is one of approximately 14 lookouts operated by the Malheur National Forest for fire detection and monitoring. Unlike some other Forest Service lookouts that have been converted to public rentals, Flagtail Lookout is classified as a "future use not existing recreation site" and is NOT currently available for public camping or overnight accommodation. Visitors seeking a lookout rental experience in Malheur National Forest should consider Fall Mountain Lookout, which is available May through October via Recreation.gov.
