About
Flagtail Lookout sits in the remote Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon within the Malheur National Forest. This fire lookout tower is one of 14 lookouts operated by the forest during summer fire season, typically staffed 4-5 months per year to detect wildfires and monitor fire danger in the region. The lookout is accessed via Forest Service roads from Seneca, requiring travel on US 395 and a series of county and forest roads including FS Road 6300-577 and 6300-594. Unlike some other fire lookouts in the Malheur National Forest that have been converted to recreational rentals, Flagtail Lookout remains an active operational facility used by the Forest Service for fire detection. It is not available for public camping or overnight rental. The surrounding area is characterized by high desert grasslands transitioning to pine and fir forests typical of the Blue Mountains.
Directions
From Seneca, travel north on US 395 for 7.5 miles. Turn left on County Road 63, then turn onto FS Road 6300-577. Stay right on FS Road 6300-594 to the end of the road at Flagtail Lookout.
