About

Charles H. Bronson Primitive Campsites provide a true backcountry camping experience in one of Central Florida's lesser-known state forests. Located approximately 40 miles east of Orlando, the forest spans nearly 11,000 acres along the St. Johns River in both Orange and Seminole counties. Three designated primitive sites—Joshua Creek, County Line, and Fern—are accessible only via hiking trails and each accommodates up to six people with space for two to three small tents. Each campsite includes a steel fire ring and picnic table, but campers must be entirely self-sufficient. There is no potable water, restrooms, trash receptacles, or electricity. All trash including food waste must be packed out. The forest is home to diverse wildlife including deer, wild turkeys, gopher tortoises, bald eagles, and sandhill cranes. Campers should be aware of snakes, alligators, and black bears in the area. The Florida National Scenic Trail passes through over seven miles of the forest, and a 40-mile network of unpaved roads and trails offers opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, and wildlife viewing. Hunting is permitted during designated seasons, and campers visiting during hunting season should wear blaze orange. Cell phone coverage is unreliable throughout the forest.
