Cataloochee Campground

Closed — Closed and not scheduled to open in 2025 due to operational capacity limitations. The closure is unrelated to Hurricane Helene damage. Typically operates mid-April through late October when open.

About

Cataloochee Campground is located in the historic Cataloochee Valley, one of the most remote and scenic areas of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Situated at an elevation of 2,610 feet, the campground is surrounded by rugged mountain ranges and pristine streams, including Cataloochee Creek, offering a peaceful escape from the more crowded areas of the park. The valley's extensive trail system sees fewer visitors than other park areas. The main trails, Caldwell Fork and Rough Fork, run parallel through the valley alongside scenic creeks and accommodate both hikers and horseback riders. For hikers only, the 3.9-mile Boogerman Trail forms a loop off Caldwell Fork Trail less than a mile from the campground. The Cataloochee Basin is renowned for excellent Rainbow and Brook trout fishing, particularly during spring when aquatic insects hatch in large numbers. The valley preserves several historic log structures from the 19th century, including the Palmer House (built 1869) with its self-guided museum, the Steve Woody House (1880), and the Caldwell Houses. These buildings are part of the park's collection of over 90 preserved historic structures. Elk are commonly spotted in the valley during spring and fall. Access requires traveling a narrow, winding gravel road with steep drop-offs and no guardrails, making it unsuitable for large RVs despite the 31-foot stated limit.

Directions

From I-40 take Exit 20 in North Carolina. Turn right onto Cove Creek Road and follow to the park boundary. The road transitions from pavement to gravel to pavement. After reaching pavement the second time, turn left. Continue 2.5 miles to an intersection, then another 0.5 miles to the left. Note: The entrance road is narrow, winding gravel with steep drop-offs and no guardrails.
