About

Big Creek Horse Camp is a small, well-equipped equestrian campground tucked along Big Creek in the remote northeastern corner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about 16 miles from Newport, Tennessee. It holds the distinction of being the only horse camp in the entire park with flush toilets and potable water, making it a popular choice among equestrians seeking a bit more comfort in the backcountry. The campground has five sites, each accommodating up to 6 people and 4 horses. Campers must bring horses to stay here. Horse stalls and central hitching racks are provided since horses cannot be tied to trees. Each site includes a fire ring, picnic table, tent pad, and designated parking. All horses entering the park must have current negative Coggins test documentation, and only processed feed is permitted to prevent the spread of invasive plant seeds. The rolling terrain surrounding the camp offers some of the best horseback riding in the Smokies. The Big Creek Trail leads to the 35-foot Mouse Creek Falls, while the 2.1-mile Chestnut Branch Trail connects to the Appalachian Trail. Brook and rainbow trout fishing is available in the nearby mountain streams. A day-use horse area allows friends to visit even if not camping.
