Big Creek Sign
Open

Open seasonally from spring through fall. Reservations required via Recreation.gov up to six months in advance. Some Big Creek area trails are closed due to Hurricane Helene damage, including portions of Big Creek Trail beyond Mouse Creek Falls, but the campground is operational. Stay limited to 14 consecutive nights.

About

Big Creek Campground occupies a remote corner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Haywood County, North Carolina. At 1,700 feet elevation along pristine Big Creek, the campground offers a backcountry-like experience with front country conveniences including flush toilets and potable water. All 12 sites are tent-only and require a short walk from the parking area. No RVs, trailers, or generators are permitted. The Big Creek area features some of the park's most challenging trails. Baxter Creek Trail begins near the campground and climbs 4,200 feet to the summit of Mt. Sterling. The more moderate Big Creek Trail follows the creek to Mouse Creek Falls, though portions beyond two miles are currently closed due to Hurricane Helene damage. The creek itself provides exceptional trout fishing, particularly during spring insect hatches. Black bear sightings are common, and food storage lockers are available for public use. All food must be stored in sealed vehicles or hard-sided containers when not in use. Fires are permitted only in the fire rings provided at each site. The campground sits at a 4-way intersection connecting to Cataloochee Valley, Cosby, and Interstate 40.

Directions

From I-40, take Exit 451 (Waterville). Follow Waterville Road, crossing over the Pigeon River past the Walters Power Generating Station. Continue one mile to the 4-way intersection at Mt Sterling Gap and follow signs to Big Creek. Drive to the end of Big Creek Entrance Road, passing the Ranger Station, horse camp, group camp, and hiker parking.
