Highway 472 Camp is a designated primitive hunter's camp strategically positioned on both sides of Louisiana Highway 472 within the Kisatchie National Forest and inside the Catahoula National Wildlife Management Preserve. The camp is split into two separate facilities directly across from each other on the highway, with the north side in the Winn Ranger District and the south side in the Catahoula Ranger District. This is an authentic, no-frills camping experience designed primarily for hunters accessing the preserve, though it's open to all visitors year-round. The campground provides basic vault toilet facilities and information boards at both locations, along with cleared areas suitable for both group camping and individual tent sites. Self-contained RVs can also utilize the site, though no hookups of any kind are provided. Campers must be completely self-reliant, bringing all necessary water for drinking and cooking as no potable water is available on-site. The camp operates exclusively on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. Despite its location directly on a state highway, the surrounding dense pine forest provides a sense of seclusion and privacy. The strategic location offers immediate access to wildlife-rich hunting grounds and forest trails, making it an ideal basecamp for sportsmen and wilderness enthusiasts seeking an authentic Louisiana backcountry experience.
