About
Evangeline Camp is a primitive camping area located in the Evangeline Unit of the Calcasieu Ranger District within Kisatchie National Forest. Situated 4 miles south of Louisiana Highway 28 on Forest Road 273 (Messina Road), the campground sits in the heart of 97,000 acres of forests offering diverse recreational opportunities just 20 minutes west of Alexandria, Louisiana in central Louisiana.
The campground features dispersed camping flats positioned just down the hill past the vault restroom facility. As a primitive camp, there is no potable water available on-site, so campers must bring their own supply. The location serves as a trailhead for the Wild Azalea National Recreation Trail, making it an ideal basecamp for hikers, mountain bikers, and road cyclists exploring the surrounding national forest.
With no fees required and open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis, Evangeline Camp appeals to self-sufficient campers seeking a quiet, undeveloped camping experience in Louisiana's only national forest. The gravel access road in the final half-mile makes it best suited for smaller vehicles and tent campers rather than large RVs.
Directions
From Alexandria, drive west on Louisiana Highway 28 for 8 miles to Forest Road 273. Turn left (south) on Messina Road (FR 273) and go 4 miles to the signed camping area and Wild Azalea Trailhead on the right. The road is paved until about 1/2 mile from the camp where it turns into gravel.
