About
Canyon Campground, also known as Canyon Transfer Camp, sits along Big Smoky Creek in the Fairfield Ranger District of Sawtooth National Forest. The campground serves as both a traditional camping destination and an equestrian staging area, with 7 single sites and 3 group sites arranged in a loop. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets and potable water from a hand pump available centrally. The campground is particularly well-suited for horse camping, featuring corrals with feeders, stock water, and a handicap-accessible loading ramp for stock. Horses must be kept in the designated corral area northwest of the campground and are not permitted in individual campsites. Big Smoky Trail #072 begins at the north end of the campground and leads to Skillern Hot Springs. The main trail is open to non-motorized travel and motorcycles, though several branch trails are restricted to non-motorized use only. A Motor Vehicle Use Map from the Fairfield Ranger Station is recommended for navigation.
Directions
From Fairfield, go north 18 miles on Forest Road #094, turn left onto Forest Road #227 for 5.5 miles, then turn north onto Forest Road #085 for 2 miles.
