About

Canebrake Horse Camp Overflow serves as primitive overflow camping for equestrians visiting Uwharrie National Forest in central North Carolina. Located adjacent to the developed Canebrake Horse Camp, this open field provides additional capacity during peak periods. The area offers direct access to approximately 40 miles of multi-use trails suitable for horseback riding, hiking, and mountain biking. This is truly primitive camping with no facilities whatsoever. There are no restrooms, no potable water, no picnic tables, and no designated fire rings. Campers must bring all necessary supplies including water and must pack out all trash or transport it to the dumpsters at the nearby Canebrake Horse Camp. Pets are permitted but must remain on leash at all times. The overflow area operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. Campers seeking amenities such as flush toilets, showers, potable water, or electric hookups should consider the main Canebrake Horse Camp instead, which accepts reservations through Recreation.gov.
