Buffalo Campground
Open for the 2026 season. The campground operates from early May through late September, weather dependent. Stage 1 fire restrictions are currently in effect across Pike National Forest. About
Buffalo Campground occupies a forested setting near Buffalo Creek in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains at 7,400 feet elevation. Located within the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area approximately one hour southwest of Denver, the campground serves as a base for exploring a 40-mile trail system that attracts mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrians. The Colorado Trail passes nearby, providing access to the Lost Creek Wilderness Area. The campground offers 38 sites split between 24 reservable and 14 first-come-first-served sites. Most are standard nonelectric sites accommodating tents or RVs, with two tent-only sites. Each site features a picnic table and fire ring with grill. Vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water, so campers must bring all water needed. No hookups or dump station exist on-site; the nearest dump station is at Chatfield Lake State Park in Littleton. Bears frequent the area, and a food storage order requires all attractants be kept in bear-resistant containers or hard-sided vehicles. Dogs must remain leashed. Summer temperatures typically reach 75-80 degrees during the day and drop to 55-65 degrees at night.
Directions
From Denver, travel southwest on US Highway 285. Turn south at Pine Junction onto Jefferson County Road 126. Follow CR 126 approximately 13.5 miles south. Turn west onto Forest Road 550. The campground is 5 miles from the turn.
