Broad Canyon Trailhead

Closed

Typically closed due to snow until early June. Operating season is generally June through October, weather and road conditions permitting. First-come, first-served only.

About

Broad Canyon Campground and Trailhead sits at 7,800 feet elevation in the Copper Basin area of the Lost River Ranger District. The eight primitive campsites are nestled in a wooded setting, providing a peaceful base for exploring the surrounding backcountry. Equestrians will find hitching rails on site, and the location serves as a jumping-off point for Broad Canyon Trail, Jarvis Trail, and Bellas Trail. The campground is quite remote, reached via a series of forest roads from Mackay. Facilities are minimal: one accessible vault toilet is provided, but no drinking water is available. Campers should come fully self-sufficient with water, food, and supplies. All Salmon-Challis National Forest campgrounds operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations.

Directions

From Mackay, take US Highway 93 north approximately 16 miles to Trail Creek Road (FS Road 208). Turn left and follow Trail Creek Road approximately 18 miles, then turn left onto Copper Basin Road (FS Road 135). Follow Copper Basin Road 13 miles and turn right onto Copper Basin Loop Road (FS Road 138). Continue 7.5 miles to Broad Canyon Road, turn right, and proceed 0.5 miles to the trailhead and campground.
