About
Yaak River Campground is situated in a heavily wooded section of the Kootenai National Forest at the confluence of the Yaak and Kootenai Rivers, approximately 8 miles west of Troy, Montana and 6.5 miles east of the Idaho border. The campground features 45 sites split between two loops, with the Yaak River dividing the facility. Each site includes a table and fire ring, surrounded by tall grasses, shrubs, young pines, and mature evergreens providing natural shade. The Yaak and Kootenai Rivers offer excellent opportunities for fishing, rafting, and canoeing. Anglers can expect to catch whitefish, rainbow trout, and cutthroat trout, with the Kootenai River designated as a blue ribbon trout stream. A primitive boat ramp in Loop B provides river access. The campground serves as a gateway to hiking and mountain biking trails throughout the Cabinet Mountains. Nearby attractions include Kootenai Falls, located 15 miles east, which is the largest un-dammed waterfall in Montana and drops 300 feet in just a few hundred yards. The campground sits along the David Thompson Historic Route, ranked among the Top 10 Scenic Drives in the Northern Rocky Mountains. Ross Creek Giant Cedars, a 100-acre grove of ancient cedars, lies 23 miles to the south. The campground is situated at 1,900 feet elevation in an area home to diverse wildlife.
