About
Yaak River Campground occupies a scenic location at the confluence of the Yaak and Kootenai Rivers in northwestern Montana's Kootenai National Forest, just 6.5 miles from the Idaho border. The campground is split in half by the Yaak River, with Loop A on the east side hosting the camp hosts and a reservable group day-use area, while Loop B includes a primitive boat ramp for river access. The 44 campsites include 7 pull-through sites averaging 32 feet in length. All sites have fire rings and picnic tables. During peak season (May through September), amenities include vault toilets, potable water from a hand pump, garbage service, and firewood. The campground operates first-come, first-served for individual sites, with a 16-day stay limit. The Yaak and Kootenai Rivers offer excellent fishing for whitefish and trout, as well as rafting and canoeing opportunities. Kootenai Falls, Montana's largest un-dammed waterfall, is about 15 miles east and features a dramatic 300-foot drop and a historic swinging bridge. Ross Creek Giant Cedars, a grove of ancient cedar trees, lies 23 miles to the south.
Directions
From Troy, travel west on Highway 2 for approximately 7 miles. The fee station and campground hosts are located on the east side of the road, prior to crossing the Yaak River.
