About

Bard Springs Recreation Area is a small, primitive campground nestled in a remote mountain setting along a small scenic stream in the Ouachita National Forest. The campground historically featured approximately 17 camping units with Adirondack-type shelters, making it a unique destination for those seeking a more rustic camping experience. The site serves as an ideal base camp for hikers exploring the adjacent Caney Creek Wilderness. The recreation area includes a small dam on the stream that creates a natural swimming pool, popular with visitors during warmer months. The remote location and primitive facilities attract campers looking for a quiet, secluded experience away from more developed campgrounds. Access requires traveling on Forest Service roads north of Athens, Arkansas. The campground historically offered basic amenities including vault toilets, potable water, picnic tables, and a picnic shelter. The setting provides opportunities for swimming, day hiking, and serving as a gateway to wilderness exploration.
