Cossatot River State Park-Natural Area protects 4,470 acres in the Ouachita Mountains of southwest Arkansas, centered on one of the most challenging whitewater rivers in the state. The Cossatot features Class IV-V rapids during high water and dramatic waterfalls that draw paddlers and hikers alike. The park preserves rare plant species and provides habitat along the river corridor. Three primitive camping areas offer a total of 23 tent sites on a self-pay basis. Cossatot Falls Area has 6 sites near the namesake rapids, Sandbar Area provides 15 sites, and Ed Banks Area has 2 more secluded sites. Each site includes a fire pit, grill, and picnic table. Solar restrooms are available nearby, but there is no potable water, electricity, or showers. River Ridge Group Camp offers primitive group camping with a pavilion, restroom, and river access by reservation. Four hiking trails span nearly 20 miles: the easy Brushy Creek Nature Trail (0.75 mi), the partially ADA-accessible Waterleaf Interpretive Trail (0.5 mi), the moderate-strenuous Harris Creek Trail (3.5 mi), and the challenging 12.5-mile River Corridor Trail. A barrier-free pedestrian river walkway provides access to scenic overlooks.

Directions

From Umpire, travel approximately 9 miles west on U.S. Highway 278. From Wickes, travel east on U.S. Highway 278. The Visitor Center is located off the highway.
