About

Axolotl Cabin offers a secluded retreat in the foothills of Montana's Gravelly Range, approximately 14 miles southwest of Ennis. Perched at 7,000 feet elevation adjacent to the Axolotl Lakes Wilderness Study Area, the cabin provides sweeping views over the Madison Valley and access to exceptional backcountry recreation. The cabin sleeps up to seven guests with a full bed, full-size fold-out futon, and two single bunk beds. The kitchen includes a propane stove/oven, refrigerator, and table with chairs. Heating comes from a wood stove and fireplace, while solar power runs the lights and refrigerator (subject to outages). Outside, guests have access to a BBQ grill, fire pit, and outhouse. Non-potable water is available on-site but requires treatment before drinking. No bedding is provided, and the cabin is not cleaned between reservations. The area supports excellent hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, and paddling in nearby lakes. A small corral near the cabin accommodates two horses; certified weed seed-free feed is required with no grazing allowed. The rare Axolotl salamander inhabits nearby lakes and should be observed but not handled. Access requires a 4WD or high-clearance vehicle, and the road becomes impassable when wet.

Directions

From Ennis, take State Highway 287 toward Virginia City. About 1/4 mile east of mile marker 11, turn south into the paved parking area near the top of Virginia City Hill. Pass through the gate with the cattle guard at the west end of the parking area. Proceed 3.1 miles on the dirt road (blind corners exist). The road descends a very steep hill and intersects another road. Turn left (east) at the intersection. Go 0.7 miles; the cabin will be on the right (south) side of the road with a locked gate marking the 0.25 mile driveway. 4WD/high clearance vehicle strongly recommended. Road may become impassable when wet.
