About

East Garrison Group Picnic Area occupies the grounds of historic Fort McDowell on the eastern shore of Angel Island, the largest natural island in San Francisco Bay. This day-use facility provides an expansive grassy area with 32 picnic tables, BBQ grills, and restroom facilities. The location offers panoramic views of San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, and the East Bay hills. The site features a large open field ideal for group activities like softball or soccer, plus a volleyball court. Quarry Beach is a short walk away. Fort McDowell served as a military installation during WWI and WWII, and some historic buildings including the chapel and guard house may be open on summer weekends based on volunteer availability. Angel Island is accessible only by public ferry from Tiburon or San Francisco, or by private boat. The East Garrison area is approximately 2 miles from the ferry landing at Ayala Cove. Dogs are not permitted on the island except for service animals.

Directions

Angel Island is accessible only by water. Public ferries operate from Tiburon (Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry) and San Francisco (Blue & Gold Fleet from Pier 41). Private boats may dock at Ayala Cove. From the ferry landing, East Garrison is approximately 2 miles via the Perimeter Road.
