About

Angel Island State Park Campground offers a unique backpacking-style camping experience in the middle of San Francisco Bay. The park features nine environmental campsites divided into three areas: Ridge Sites, Sunrise Sites, and Eastbay Sites, all requiring a 1-2 mile trek from the Ayala Cove ferry landing. Ridge sites offer the best views but are more exposed to sun and wind, while other sites provide more shelter from the elements. The island is rich with 3,000 years of history, from its use as a hunting and fishing site by the Coast Miwok to its role as a U.S. Immigration Station from 1910-1940. Military history spans from the Civil War through the Cold War, with preserved historic sites including Camp Reynolds, Fort McDowell, and the Immigration Station Museum. The perimeter road offers stunning 360-degree views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco skyline, Marin Headlands, and Mount Tamalpais. Access is exclusively by public ferry from San Francisco (Golden Gate Ferry) or Tiburon (Angel Island Tiburon Ferry), or by private boat to Ayala Cove. The island prohibits dogs (except service animals), motorized vehicles, and wood fires. Camping facilities are primitive with vault toilets and food lockers at each site, but no drinking water is available on the island. Seasonally, visitors can enjoy café services, bike rentals, and tram tours.

Directions

Access to Angel Island is by public ferry or private boat only. Golden Gate Ferry operates from San Francisco, and Angel Island Tiburon Ferry operates from Tiburon. Campsites are a 1-2 mile hike from the Ayala Cove ferry landing.
