About
Angel Island State Park provides one of the most distinctive camping experiences in the Bay Area. As a true island with no road or bridge access, reaching the campground requires a ferry ride from Tiburon, San Francisco, or Vallejo, or arrival by private boat or kayak. From the ferry dock at Ayala Cove, campers face a 1.5 to 2-mile hike with uphill sections to reach their campsite, carrying all gear. Bicycles and wagons are permitted to assist with transport. The park features several environmental camping areas spread across the island. East Bay Sites offer wind protection, while Ridge Sites reward campers with sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco skyline. Sunrise Sites can be reserved individually or combined for groups up to 24 people. Kayak Camp on the west side accommodates groups up to 20 near a small beach. Each campsite includes a picnic table, bear-proof food locker, running water, pit toilet, and charcoal barbecue grill. Wood fires are prohibited on the island; only charcoal grills and camp stoves are permitted. Dogs are not allowed anywhere on the island except for service animals. Ayala Cove offers a seasonal camp store, restaurant, and snack bar. Reservations are made through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance and fill quickly, especially for weekend dates.
Directions
Angel Island is accessible only by water. Public ferries operate from Tiburon (Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry), San Francisco (Blue & Gold Fleet from Pier 41), and seasonally from Vallejo. Private boats may anchor or use mooring balls. From the ferry landing at Ayala Cove, hike 1.5 to 2 miles on the Perimeter Road and campsite access trails to reach your assigned site.
