About

Amphitheater Campground is located on the mountainside above Ouray, Colorado at 8,400 feet elevation in the Uncompahgre National Forest. The campground takes its name from the massive gray volcanic cliffs that tower over the town, formed by ancient volcanic and glacial activity. With 35 camping spurs arranged in loops among Gambel oaks and mixed conifers, the campground offers a scenic overlook of both the natural amphitheater and the historic mountain town below. The campground serves as a trailhead for several popular hikes including Upper Cascade Falls, Baby Bath Tubs, and Chief Ouray Mine trails. The area is a favorite among jeep and off-road enthusiasts due to its proximity to numerous 4x4 routes. Nearby Ouray offers dining, shopping, lodging, and a public hot springs pool. The campground is best suited for tent camping and smaller RVs. Sites 3-15 can accommodate RVs up to 35 feet total length. This is bear country, so proper food storage is required. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, with vault toilets and potable water available throughout.
