About

Ambrose A. Call State Park is a 138-acre oasis of rugged hills and virgin timber in Kossuth County, Iowa, near the east fork of the Des Moines River. Named after Ambrose Call, one of the first settlers in the county who carved his name on a walnut tree at this site on July 9, 1854, the park was donated to the state in 1925 by Call's daughter. The campground offers 16 sites, including 13 with 30-amp electric hookups and 3 non-electric sites. This is a non-modern campground with pit toilets and water hydrants for filling tanks, but no shower building or modern restrooms. All sites are reservable through the Iowa state parks reservation system from April 15 through November 15. A centerpiece of the park is the log cabin-style lodge built in 1928, available for day-use rental from May through September and perfect for family reunions and gatherings. The park also features an 18-hole disc golf course that winds through wooded areas and prairies, two miles of secluded forest trails, horseshoe pits, and a replica log cabin resembling the original settler's cabin. Cross-country skiing is available in winter on the park trails.
