About
Dolliver Memorial State Park is a 594-acre gem in northwest Iowa, offering dramatic natural scenery along the Des Moines River Valley. The park is known for its sandstone bluffs, including the striking 100-foot Copperas Beds formation where Native Americans once gathered mineral deposits for dyes and paints. Boneyard Hollow, a box canyon named for the deer and bison bones still found there, contains Oneota-era petroglyphs etched into the rock walls. The campground sits on a bluff overlooking the Des Moines River and requires reservations through the Iowa DNR system. Electric campsites, tent-only sites, and youth group areas are available. Facilities include a modern restroom and shower building plus a dump station. Two family cabins sleeping four are equipped with refrigerators, cooktops, microwaves, and sinks for those wanting more amenities. Much of the park's infrastructure was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration in the 1930s. Historic CCC structures remain in use, including rustic lodges available for day-use rental and a group camp. Three Woodland-era burial mounds near the park's southeast corner add archaeological significance to the natural beauty.
