About

Alder Thicket Campground serves as the northern gateway into the Blue Mountains within the Umatilla National Forest. Located in Garfield County, Washington, on the Pomeroy Ranger District, this primitive campground sits just three miles off the forest boundary on Forest Service Road 40. The site features overgrown trees and tall alder shrubbery that provide plenty of shade for hot summer days. This free campground offers basic facilities including a vault toilet and picnic tables. There is no potable water on site, so campers must bring their own supply. Hiking trails are accessible within five miles of the campground, and the Clearwater Guard Station is located six miles away. The campground is typically accessible from late May through October or November, depending on weather conditions. Forest Service Road 40 closes at Rose Spring snow park from December 1 through March 31 for snowmobile trail grooming, making the campground inaccessible for winter camping.

Directions

From Pomeroy, Washington: Take 15th Street south from Main Street for approximately 17 miles to the forest boundary (stay on paved road from town to boundary). The road turns to gravel and becomes Forest Service Road 40. Continue on Road 40 for approximately 3 miles. Alder Thicket Campground will be on the right side of the road.
