About

Junction Creek Campground is a well-developed Forest Service campground in the San Juan National Forest, situated just 5 miles northwest of Durango, Colorado. The campground sits at 7,300 feet elevation on a south-facing hillside covered in ponderosa pine and gambel oak, positioned a quarter-mile above Junction Creek. Four camping loops provide 44 sites total, with 29 reservable through Recreation.gov and the remainder available first-come, first-served. Fourteen sites offer electric hookups. The campground marks the beginning of the Colorado Trail, a 500-mile route stretching to Denver through subalpine forests and alpine meadows. Mountain biking is extremely popular here, with access to both the Colorado Trail and the nearby Logchute Trail System. Junction Creek provides fishing opportunities for rainbow and brook trout, with better success found upstream from the campground. Haviland Lake is a 35-minute drive away, offering an 80-acre no-wake lake with boating, canoeing, and accessible fishing docks. Downtown Durango provides whitewater rafting, a river trail, shops, restaurants, and the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

Directions

From Durango, travel to North Main and turn west on 25th Street (across from La Plata County Fairgrounds). 25th Street becomes Junction Road, then Junction Creek Road. Follow approximately 5.5 miles to the campground entrance.
