About
Miner's Cabin Dispersed Area Campground is nestled in the San Juan National Forest along County Road 124 (La Plata Canyon Road), approximately six miles north of Highway 160 near Durango. This rustic, no-fee dispersed camping area embodies the authentic Colorado backcountry experience, offering a small number of scattered campsites surrounded by towering pines, aspens, and mountain streams. The campground provides basic amenities including fire rings at each site and vault toilets, with no potable water or electrical hookups available. Campers should be prepared to filter or treat water from nearby streams. The area reflects its mining heritage, with opportunities for gold panning and exploring historical mining sites. Some sources indicate the presence of a horse corral for equestrian visitors. Access to the campground requires driving on gravel roads, and a 4WD vehicle is recommended, especially during certain seasons or for exploring further into the forest. The location serves as an ideal base for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, four-wheeling, and wildlife viewing. The secluded nature of the campsites provides privacy and tranquility, making it perfect for those who prefer primitive camping over developed facilities. County Road 124 can experience seasonal closures due to snow, particularly at higher elevations.
Directions
From Durango, head west on Highway 160. Approximately 100 yards west of the Hesperus turnoff, turn north onto County Road 124 (La Plata Canyon Road). Drive about six miles into the national forest; pavement transitions to gravel. Look for a sign for Miner's Cabin on the right, typically after a fenced property. 4WD recommended.
