About

Madden Creek Campground sits at approximately 9,800 feet elevation in La Plata Canyon, roughly 8 miles west of Durango within the San Juan National Forest. As a designated dispersed camping area, it provides a more primitive camping experience with basic facilities. The campground features a vault toilet but no potable water, trash service, or hookups. Due to Forest Service regulations, camping in La Plata Canyon is restricted to designated sites only, including Madden Creek, to protect natural resources and manage recreational use. The area is surrounded by a mix of spruce, fir, and aspen forest, offering scenic mountain views. Campers should be prepared for primitive conditions and pack out all trash. The standard 14-day stay limit applies, and campers must move at least 2 miles away before returning. Access is via La Plata County Road 124, which may be impassable during winter months due to snow.

Directions

From Durango, travel 12 miles west on U.S. Highway 160. Turn north on County Road 124 at Hesperus. The campground is located 5 miles up County Road 124. The paved road turns to gravel at the National Forest boundary.
