About
Bay City Campground is a dispersed camping area located in the San Juan National Forest near Durango, Colorado. This free camping location provides a rustic camping experience without any developed amenities or services. The campground is accessible via paved road, making it easier to reach than many dispersed sites, though it can only accommodate smaller RVs up to 15 feet in length due to space constraints. As a true dispersed camping area, Bay City Campground has no facilities whatsoever. There is no water available, no restrooms, and no trash service. Campers must be completely self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. The site operates on a first-come, first-served basis with a maximum stay limit of 14 days, typical of Forest Service dispersed camping areas. The campground's location in the San Juan National Forest provides access to the surrounding national forest lands for hiking, mountain biking, and exploring the scenic southwestern Colorado landscape. Winter access may be limited depending on snow conditions and road closures.
Directions
From Hesperus, Colorado, head west on Highway 160 for approximately 2 miles. Turn north onto County Road 124 and continue for about 5 miles. The campground is located along this road, with the last mile being a well-maintained dirt road.
